Message from the Chair

Welcome to the William B. Burnsed, Jr. Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering.

If you are familiar with our department, you may have noticed we changed our name. Our department name was changed in 2019 to honor one of our illustrious mechanical engineering alumni. We changed the department’s name again in 2020 to reflect the expansion of our research and educational missions to the growing fields of aerospace engineering and biomedical engineering.

Our department’s name is not the only change around here. We have added new concentrations in Aerospace Engineering and in Biomedical Engineering to better prepare students for careers in those growing and exciting fields. Students in those tracks will still get a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, but with their specialization added.  These specialized tracks are optional. Most of our students will complete a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering without a specialization, while others may get a minor in another discipline such as music or mathematics.

Whether you plan to be a mechanical engineer, an aerospace engineer or a biomedical engineer – or a physician or an astronaut, we can help prepare you to accomplish your goals. I hope you will take some time to look over our website and see some of the exciting and innovative work by our students and faculty. Better yet, come visit us! I’d be delighted to show you around.
